Howard Sprague is Mayberry’s artless county clerk and the long-suffering son of Mrs. Sprague. He is portrayed by actor Jack Dodson in 38 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and 45 episodes of Mayberry R.F.D.. He also appears in the TV movie Return to Mayberry and an episode of “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show”, entitled “The Day Howard Moved In”.
Andy and Helen have many pleasant social outings: they attend dances, picnic at Myers Lake, and double date with others (usually Barney Fife and Thelma Lou). Their relationship however, is not one of complete sweetness and light. The two have frequent disagreements, sudden jealousies, misunderstandings, and lover’s quarrels.
Added by EllieWalkerIn “Helen, the Authoress”, for example, Helen has written a book and uses her evenings to rewrite the manuscript before its publication by a Richmond firm. When she cancels a dinner date with Andy to work on her book, Andy becomes impatient and tells her that he doesn’t have to sit home alone. Helen is indignant, of course, and brushes him off. Andy then calls Mavis Neff (a woman reputed to be “rather forward”), and arranges a date with her. When Mavis gets too close, Andy realizes his mistake and apologizes to Helen. She and Andy are married in the first episode of Mayberry R.F.D. and appear with a newborn son, Andrew Taylor, Jr., in a later episode. She is also in the TV movie Return to Mayberry. She is played by actress Aneta Corsaut in 66 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show.
He was portrayed by Clint Howard, the younger brother of Ron Howard.
Ellie Walker is a pharmacist who assists her uncle Fred Walker at Walker’s Drugstore in Mayberry. She is played by actress Elinor Donahue in twelve episodes of the first season of The Andy Griffith Show, during which she becomes Andy Taylor’s girlfriend. After her appearance in episode 131 The Guitar Player Returns, she inexplicably disappears. Ellie makes 12 appearances in the first season. Despite the paucity of her appearances, she was intended as a series regular. Unlike girlfriends that would follow, her portrayer, Elinor Donahue, is given opening credit billing, alongside Andy Griffith.
Thelma Lou’s last name and occupation are never revealed, however in one episode she mentions getting back to the office. Her two cousins are Mary Grace Gossage and Karen Moore. She lives in a small, quaint home within Mayberry city limits – making Barney’s ice cream deliveries much quicker.
Thelma Lou’s RomancesEdit
Barney Fife would be considered Thelma Lou’s first and last true love. They had their tiffs, but would always seem to get back together. There were times when Thelma Lou would successfully make Barney jealous – by using Andy Taylor and Gomer Pyle. But as Barney said, “Thelma Lou, you’re the only girl I love!”
In her last appearance on the series, Barney returns to Mayberry to discover that Thelma Lou is married to a man she met in Florida named Gerald Whitfield.
